Things To Do And See Locally
Borth Y Gest
A pretty, unspoilt village with its hidden golden sandy coves and cliffs, which can be reached on foot via a winding path at the far end of the quay, or a three minute drive from the centre of town. Ships were built here before Porthmadog was established and there were four busy boat yards. Houses were built by the mouth of the harbour for pilots so that they could keep a look- out for ships that needed their attention. These houses are still known as ‘pilot houses’. It is a favourite place for those who love the sea more than simply lying on the beach.
Morfa Bychan
Porthmadog Golf Club Many golfers use Porthmadog as their base and play at the ever popular Porthmadog course, located in Morfa Bychan, five minutes drive from the town centre. Overlooking Black Rock Sands, there is a mixture of heath and linksland with two distinct halves. The front 9 are away from the coast with the back 9 heading for the sea where the course is transformed into pure links. A carry of over 200 yards is required to clear the beach on the 12th hole and the tough 14th, called the Himalayas. This is a 378 yard par 4 that demands you drive over a huge natural bunker that hides the fairway from the tee. Royal St David’s in Harlech and Pwllheli are other links courses within a 25 minute drive from the town.
Black Rock Sands One of the very few beaches in Britain where you can step out of the car and straight on to the sands, which stretch as far as you can see. The surrounding sand dunes have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, affording spectacular views of all Cardigan Bay. Sunbathe and swim to your heart’s content whilst enjoying mountain scenery. The shallow water makes it a haven for youngsters, but note that the area is popular with jet ski and powerboat enthusiasts. These are kept well away from sensible bathers. Facilities include beach parking, toilets, showers, drinking water, dog and craft restriction zones and a launch area.
