main line railway. However, when this scheme failed, it became a flood control pool for the old slate harbour. After crossing the bridge, to the right is a footpath that takes you along the top of the inner harbour wall.

Along this path to the left are scenic views of ‘Traeth Mawr’ at the Glaslyn river estuary. This flood plain grassland is refuge to many species of wading birds such as herons, curlews, sandpipers, geese, ducks and swans to mention but a few. If you are lucky, you may see our local ospreys fishing! The flora and fauna give rise to an area of Special Scientific Interest as well as of great beauty with the impressive backdrop of Cnicht, the Moelwyns and Cambrian hills.

Just before the end of the path, why not sit on one of the benches and take in the magnificent views, perhaps with one of the trains from Harbour Station en route to Blaenau Ffestiniog?

After that, continue along the path over the sluice gates to exit opposite the Ffestiniog Railway to your left and the Tourist Information Centre to your right. For the more adventurous, continue alongside the tourist office around Pen Cei, pass the Yacht Club and boat yards, turn right up the short hill and the path will take you down to Borth y Gest.
